NFS 3/8 and SPV 3/11

Please choose one of the following topics to write a research paper on.

  • Glasses
  • Contact Lenses
  • Microscope
  • Telescope
  • Camera
  • Projector
  • They eye and vision problems
Here is a rough outline of how the paper should be structured
  1. Introduction
  2. History of my topic
  3. The electromagnetic spectrum
  4. Visible light
  5. How lenses manipulate light
  6. How my topic uses lenses
  7. Conclusion

The due the frog dissection, the 8th grade Catalina trip, and spring break, the due date will be given sometime in the near future. I anticipate us finishing this research paper around April 17th.

SPV 2/25 and NFS 2/26

Scroll down and complete the virtual frog dissection twice to get a feeling for the steps and what you will see. Create a presentation titled "Last, First - Frog Dissection Steps". Please share your presentation as soon as you have titled it. There should be 19 slides as outlined below. Each slide will need a:
  • Detailed description of what to do for that step
  • An explanation for why you do the step
  • For slides 11-18, tell me what system that organ is a part of and what its function is
  • Realistic Picture (no cartoons, animations, etc.)
    • Relevant pictures can be hard to find, so screenshots could be very helpful

  1. Gather tools
    1. Gloves
    2. Tray
    3. Scalpel
    4. Scissors
    5. Tweezers
    6. Pins
    7. Probe
  2. Rinse frog
  3. Pin legs and arms

    1. Above shoulders
    2. Down to legs
  5. Pin down skin flaps
  6. Make an "I" shaped cut with scissors through muscle and bone
    1. Start at legs
    2. Turn scissors at sternum
  7. Pin down flaps

  9. Carefully remove fat bodies
  10. Remove: liver
  11. Heart
  12. Lungs
  13. Stomach

  15. Large intestine
  16. Bladder
  17. Kidneys
  18. Remove skin from legs with scissors
  19. Clean up

NFS 2/11

Please complete the animations below and write out a step-by-step set of instructions on how to conduct a flower dissection. Each step should have at least one drawing. This should be done on paper.

SPV 2/8

Read the two links below.
The History of Genetics - How Animals Were Domesticated
The History of Genetics - How Wild Plants Were Domesticated

Email Mr. Collings a 2 paragraph summary of the articles above.

Once you have emailed your summary, begin the assignment below.

Please complete the animations below and write out a step-by-step set of instructions on how to conduct a flower dissection. Each step should have at least one drawing. This should be done on paper.

NFS 2/5 and SPV 2/6

Play the game below. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE DIRECTIONS! Once you have finished, in an email, write a 2 paragraph summary and reflection of what this game has taught you about natural selection. Then write a one paragraph compare/contrast of this game and the off-road vehicle assignment from Friday and a one paragraph reflection of how inheritance is connected to natural selection.

NFS 1/28 and SPV 1/31

Today you will be designing an off road vehicle to look at the idea of natural selection.

First, open a new tab and create a google doc that is titled correctly (Last, First - Natural Selection) and then share it with Mr. Collings.

Here is the situation; you are in charge of designing a vehicle that can drive from here (O'Neals or North Fork) to Yosemite without using any roads as quickly as possible. In your google doc, answer the following questions using complete sentences (please copy and paste these questions to your doc to save time)

1. Where should the wheels be?
2. How far apart should the wheels be?
3. How big should the wheels be?
4. What should the suspension (shock absorbers) do?
5. What shape should the vehicle be?

Once you have answered these five questions to the best of your ability, please click on the link below.

OFF ROAD VEHICLE NATURAL SELECTION

After watching these off road vehicles, lets see how your understanding of off road vehicle design has changed. In your google doc, answer the following questions using complete sentences (please copy and paste these questions to your doc to save time). I know you have answered the first 5 already, but lets see if your ideas have changed. Please do not put the exact same answers.

1. Where should the wheels be?
2. How far apart should the wheels be?
3. How big should the wheels be?
4. What should the suspension (shock absorbers) do?
5. What shape should the vehicle be?
6. What causes vehicles to tip over?
7. What was special about the vehicles that went the furthest?
8. How is this similar to natural selection in animals?

SPV 11/25 and NF 11/26

Parts of the cell presentation

Create a presentation with each of the following topics having one slide. Each slide should have one picture of the organelle, one picture of what that organelle would compare to if the cell were a factory (e.g. the nucleus would be the boss), and a description of what the organelle does.
DO NOT COPY AND PASTE YOUR DESCRIPTIONS!
All descriptions must be in your own words and must have a source clearly cited on the references page.
When you are done, you should have 17 slides (title+15 organelles+references)

  • Cell Membrane
  • Cell Wall
  • Chloroplast
  • Cytoplasm
  • Cytoskeleton
  • Golgi Apparatus
  • Lysosome
  • Mitochondria
  • Nucleus
  • Peroxisome
  • Ribosomes
  • Secretory Vesicles
  • Smooth and Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
  • Vacuole

Grading for Project
50% - Information
20% - Citation of sources
15% - Being on task during project
15% - Professionalism of presentation

NF 9/24 & SPV 9/25

Post a link in your parking lot document to the best video you can find that explains what your body system does. Please make sure that this video is less than 3 minutes in length.

NF 9/20 & SPV 9/21

In a google doc, write a 3 paragraph summary of the function of your organ system. Your concept map is going to serve as an outline for this. Please be sure to share this document so that I can give you feedback before it is due.

NF 9/14 & SPV 9/15

Mono Lake trip information

NF 9/12 & SPV 9/13

Find 3 online resources that will teach your classmates what the job of your body system is. Copy the links into your parking lot document that you shared with me. For each link, write a 2-3 sentence description of what the resource teaches and how you are planning to use it.

SPV 9/11

Sub Day - Notes and section review on chapter 2 lesson 2

SPV 9/7 & NF 9/10

Add 15+ connections to your concept map. Remember that connections are lines that connect two ideas to create complete thoughts. See the example below.

SPV 9/5 & NF 9/6

  • Rank all of the words in your parking lot in order of importance.
  • Go to bubbl.us and create an account.
  • Name your sheet "Last, First - [Body System]".
  • Click "Save".
  • Click the downward arrow next to the "Sharing" button.
  • Click "Read Only Link to Sheet".
  • Copy the web address given.
  • Paste this web address into your parking lot.
  • Add all of the words in your parking lot to your concept map with the most important words at the top and less important words at the bottom.
  • Be sure to save before you exit.

SPV 8/31 & NF 9/4

Searching the textbook, websites, videos, etc., collect at least 20 words that are directly connected with your body system. You should find all the parts of your body system, but your focus should be on what the function of your system is. Look for words that describe what it does and how it does it. Add these words to a google document titled "Last, First - Parking Lot" and share it with me.
